Literacy
This curricular area covers listening and talking, reading and writing of English and modern languages.
Literacy learning in Thorntree Primary School is based around Literacy For All which is used across Glasgow.
In Thorntree, we provide a wide range of different learning experiences and activities which promote critical and creative thinking in all aspects of literacy across the whole school. Children are taught phonics alongside before, during and after reading strategies which helps them to read a variety of different texts. Children are also given the opportunity to practise different genres of writing which is enhanced by the use of technology using Ipads and apps. Cursive handwriting also forms part of our writing curriculum. In addition, children are given the skills, experience and confidence to listen and talk in different contexts and different groupings. Children learn about the different roles involved in working as a group and they are given experience in each role. Children are supported in Literacy in a variety of ways. Their individual needs are identified and appropriate support is provided where necessary.
Targeted Intervention Groups
Our Challenge Leader of Learning, Miss Alison Beattie, works with targeted intervention groups to improve skills and confidence in writing.
Everywhere Bear Transition Programme
In August and September, we ran a new transition programme for P1 parents and children which included lots of fun learning activities based around the story The Everywhere Bear. The sessions were very popular and those that attend gave excellent feedback on how much they enjoyed spending time with their child and learning new things.
P1 Book Bug ‘Sneak Peak’ Session
We were delighted to offer a parent and child family learning event which gave a ‘sneak peak’ of the wonderful books in the Scottish Book Trust P1 Book Bug Bag. This is a very popular events and families enjoyed coming along to try some fun games and activities.
P2 and P3 Read, Write Count ‘Sneak Peak’ Session
We also invited parents and children to come along for a ‘sneak peak’ of the books and activities in the Scottish Book Trust P2 and P3 Read, Write, Count Bags. Families came along and enjoyed some fun numeracy, literacy and craft activities.
